Star outfielder Juan Soto has made a huge decision by agreeing to a record-breaking 15-year, $765 million deal with the New York Mets, with a signing bonus of $75 million and an opt-out after the 2029 season if the total contract value isn’t raised to $805 million. This deal, the largest in professional sports history, ends speculation about Soto’s future as he was being pursued by several other teams. The 26-year-old, four-time All-Star had an impressive season with the Yankees, hitting 41 home runs and 109 RBIs with a .289 batting average. Soto’s career includes 201 home runs, 592 RBIs, a World Series win in 2019, five Silver Slugger awards, and a batting title in 2020. Retaining Soto was a top priority for the Yankees, but the Mets snatched him away in a move that could potentially put them over the top in their quest for a World Series title as the team hasn’t won in 39 years. The signing marks another major expenditure by Mets owner Steve Cohen, who has been aggressive in spending since acquiring the team in 2020. With Soto secured, the MLB winter meetings are expected to see more transactions this week. Stay tuned for updates on 10 players currently eligible for free agency after the 2024 World Series.
