US president-elect Donald Trump has called for an immediate ceasefire and negotiations between Ukraine and Russia to end the ongoing conflict. Trump’s comments came after meeting with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris. Zelensky responded, emphasizing the need for effective guarantees for peace. Trump’s call for a ceasefire comes as Ukraine revealed that around 43,000 soldiers have been killed and 370,000 wounded in the conflict with Russia.
Meanwhile, Russian forces have taken control of the settlement of Blahodatne in eastern Ukraine, according to Russia’s RIA state news agency. However, this territorial capture has not been confirmed by Ukrainian military officials. Russia now controls nearly 20% of Ukraine’s territory and has been advancing through the Donetsk region at a rapid pace.
In other news, the Ukrainian navy has reported that its drones have struck and destroyed surveillance systems on Russian-controlled gas platforms in Crimea. This latest attack is part of intensified efforts to target Russian assets in the region. Additionally, Denmark has delivered a second batch of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, further strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses against Russian aggression. The news of these developments comes amidst ongoing concerns about the rise of “extremely pathogenic” multi-drug resistant bacteria in war-torn Ukraine.
