New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has appointed Andy Kim to the U.S. Senate following the certification of the general election results last week. Kim, who won 53% of the vote in November, will finish the remaining weeks of former Senator Bob Menendez’s term. Menendez resigned after being convicted on corruption charges. Murphy’s former chief of staff, George Helmy, had been serving as interim senator but resigned last week to make way for Kim.
Governor Murphy congratulated Senator Kim for making history as the first Asian American Senator from New Jersey and the first Korean American Senator in the nation. Kim, who previously served in Congress, expressed his commitment to fighting for the American Dream that remains out of reach for many.
Kim’s appointment allows him to begin the transition smoothly and hit the ground running when he officially takes office in January. His election is seen as a significant milestone, not only for the state of New Jersey but also for the country as a whole.
Kim expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent the state that gave his family a chance at the American Dream. He is prepared to advocate for those who still seek to achieve their own dreams and is eager to start working on day one in the Senate.
