John Calipari’s assistance in helping Karl-Anthony Towns cope with shock of Knicks trade

NBA player Karl-Anthony Towns recently shared his experience of being traded from the Minnesota Timberwolves to the New York Knicks, receiving advice from coach John Calipari. Despite initial shock and hurt, Calipari assured Towns that the Knicks were the right fit for him. The trade, which also involved Julius Randle, has proven beneficial for both players.

From Minnesota’s perspective, the trade aimed to avoid future luxury tax issues. Randle, while playing well, hasn’t reached his All-Star form from New York, while Towns is thriving with the Knicks. Calipari, who maintains a close relationship with Towns, praised both players for handling the trade well.

Calipari also discussed his connections with the Knicks front office and expressed admiration for coach Tom Thibodeau. He jokingly referred to the team as the “Wildcat U” due to the presence of former Kentucky players.

Despite a challenging start to his NBA coaching career with the Nets in the late ’90s, Calipari remains positive about his upcoming game at the Jimmy V Classic at MSG. He will be coaching the Razorbacks against Michigan, just before the Knicks face the Hawks. Calipari also noted Towns’ growth under Thibodeau in New York and believes the All-Star player is thriving in the new environment.
