American Airlines has announced the indefinite suspension of daily flights from Miami International Airport to Port-au-Prince’s Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Haiti. This decision comes after the Federal Aviation Administration prohibited U.S. airlines from flying to Haiti due to recent incidents of planes being shot at by gangs. The United Nations has also temporarily suspended flights to Port-au-Prince, limiting humanitarian aid to the country.
This suspension has caused severe problems for Haitians in both the U.S. and Haiti, as roads in and out of the capital are controlled by armed gangs, and alternative means of transportation are limited. The only other airport in Haiti that can receive commercial international flights is in Cap-Haïtien, further complicating travel for Haitians. Despite these challenges, the United States continues to deport Haitians back to the country, with recent deportations even amid flooding and blocked access to other parts of Haiti.
Other airlines, such as JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines, have also suspended flights to Haiti, and it remains unclear when they will resume operations. The closure of airspace between Haiti and the Dominican Republic, as well as the suspension of flights from other countries like the Bahamas, further isolates Haiti from international travel. The situation in Haiti remains complex, with limited options for air travel and ongoing challenges for Haitians both in the country and abroad.
