In a recent interview with NBC News in Doha, Qatar, Hadi al-Bahra, president of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, discussed the future path for the transfer of power in Syria following the stunning capture of Damascus by opposition forces. Al-Bahra emphasized the desire for a united Syria, excluding division.
Although his group does not have a formal relationship with HTS, the rebel group responsible for capturing Damascus, they are in contact. The opposition forces plan to establish a transitional civilian government that would not include HTS members and lead the country until free elections can be held within an 18-month timeframe.
Al-Bahra also stated their goal of having all foreign militaries, including the U.S., Russia, Iran, and Turkey, withdraw from Syria during the same 18-month transition period. The opposition forces plan to deport foreign ISIS fighters and establish a special commission to investigate forcibly disappeared prisoners, including American journalist Austin Tice.
Al-Bahra highlighted the U.N.’s possession of approximately 1 million files detailing crimes committed in Syria, hinting at the formation of a national court or involvement with the ICC. The plans put forth by the Syrian opposition forces aim to bring stability and justice to Syria in the aftermath of the conflict.
