A small plane made a statement over MetLife Stadium urging Giants co-owner John Mara to fix the team’s ongoing struggles ahead of their game against the New Orleans Saints. The Giants, entering the game with a 2-10 record, have faced criticism for their performance under head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen. Since winning the Super Bowl in 2012, the team has only made the playoffs twice, most recently in 2022 when they won a playoff game for the first time since 2011.
This season has been particularly challenging for the Giants, who released quarterback Daniel Jones midway through his contract after informing him he would not play again in 2023. The decision was made following a series of disappointing performances by the team. Jones later signed with the Vikings’ practice squad.
This incident is reminiscent of a similar protest in the late 1970s when fans hired a plane to fly over Giants Stadium with a banner reading “15 Years of Lousy Football. … We’ve Had Enough.” During that period, the Giants struggled to achieve more than six wins in a season until the NFL expanded the regular season to 16 games in 1978-79.
As the Giants continue to face scrutiny and calls for change, it remains to be seen how the organization will respond to the current challenges on the field.
