The FDNY has determined that faulty electrical wiring was the cause of a deadly three-alarm fire in an Upper East Side building earlier this week. The fire started on the building’s fifth floor and quickly spread to the fourth and sixth floors, leaving one man dead and several firefighters injured. The victim was found collapsed in a hallway area on the fifth floor, overcome with smoke.
Residents of the building described a chaotic scene as the fire raged, with people banging on doors and screaming for help. Most of the building’s 23 units were damaged in the blaze, leaving residents outside looking on helplessly. Second-floor resident Matthew Myers recounted smelling smoke and seeing a violent blaze on the fifth floor that blew out windows, causing concern for the safety of the entire building.
Six firefighters were treated for minor injuries as they worked to bring the fire under control, which took about an hour. The victim was identified right away, and the cause of the fire was determined to be faulty electrical wiring. The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety measures and the potential dangers of electrical issues in buildings.
