Witness the Attack of December 7, 1941 Through Photos

On December 7, 1941, the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese launched the United States into World War II and resulted in the deaths of 2,403 service members and civilians. This event left a lasting scar on the American psyche, comparable only to the attacks of September 11. Efforts to identify those who died during the attack continue to this day. In response to the attack, President Franklin D. Roosevelt invoked the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, leading to the imprisonment of over 100,000 Japanese Americans, many of whom were U.S. citizens, in concentration camps. The U.S. Congress issued an apology for this incarceration in 1988, attributing it to racial prejudice, wartime hysteria, and a failure of political leadership. Recently, the Trump administration has expressed interest in invoking the same act again to remove undocumented immigrants. Eighty-three years after the Pearl Harbor attacks, the photos from that day and its aftermath continue to serve as a reminder of the events that occurred and the impact they had on the nation.
