Trump reaffirms support for Hegseth amid defense nominee’s scrutiny

President-elect Donald Trump is standing by Pete Hegseth as his choice for defense secretary, despite doubts from Trump’s allies that Hegseth can survive the Senate confirmation process. Trump praised Hegseth’s track record and expressed confidence in him, even though there are reports that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is being considered for the role as well. Trump admitted that he hasn’t received much support from GOP senators for Hegseth’s nomination.

Hegseth has faced troubling allegations, including accusations of sexual assault and misconduct while working for veteran’s charity groups. These claims have been denied by a lawyer representing Hegseth, who called them “totally false”. Hegseth also addressed reports of being intoxicated in his previous role, denying the reports and pledging not to drink if confirmed as defense secretary.

Trump has voiced his concerns about the allegations against Hegseth, but mentioned that people who know him well have said he doesn’t have a drinking problem. The confirmation of Hegseth as defense secretary remains uncertain, as the Senate will ultimately have to confirm Trump’s nominees. Despite the doubts surrounding Hegseth, Trump continues to support him for the position.
