South Korea President Joon narrowly avoids impeachment vote following declaration of martial law

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol narrowly survived an impeachment vote in parliament following his attempt to impose martial law, which was later rescinded after widespread backlash. The opposition Democratic Party vowed to try again, while Yoon’s party promised to find a more orderly solution. Prior to the failed impeachment vote, thousands of protesters gathered demanding Yoon’s removal.

Yoon apologized to the nation and expressed that he would leave his future in office up to his party. His party, however, closed ranks and boycotted the vote, with some members expressing doubts about his suitability for office. Despite calls for resignation, Yoon vowed not to impose martial law again.

The martial law declaration by Yoon had caused international concern, as the U.S. Defense Secretary canceled plans to travel to South Korea in response. Yoon accused the National Assembly of obstruction and undermining government functions, leading to his decision to impose martial law. If Yoon were to leave office before his term ends, a presidential election would be required within 60 days.

The impeachment vote failed to reach the necessary majority, and Yoon survived the attempt to remove him from office. The nation remains divided over his leadership, with ongoing protests and calls for his resignation continuing. Yoon’s political future remains uncertain as South Korea grapples with one of its most significant political crises in recent history.
