New York City’s mayor becomes more open to Trump and doesn’t dismiss possibility of switching to Republicans

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has sparked controversy after hinting at possibly switching parties to become a Republican, as he has increasingly shown support for President-elect Donald Trump and his policies. Adams, a Democrat facing federal corruption charges, previously was a registered Republican in the 1990s and early 2000s but has since been a Democrat.

During interviews on Friday, Adams did not rule out the possibility of switching parties, stating that the most important party for him is the “American party.” While he intends to run for re-election as a Democrat, he emphasized his commitment to American values regardless of his party affiliation.

Critics have accused Adams of aligning with Trump to secure a pardon in his corruption case, as he has expressed support for the president-elect’s immigration policies and willingness to roll back sanctuary policies in New York City. Despite distancing himself from mass deportations, Adams’ recent stance is a significant departure from his previous positions on immigration.

His critics, including challengers in the Democratic mayoral primary, have condemned Adams for his perceived shift towards right-wing ideologies. State assembly member Zohran Mamdani accused Adams of betraying Democratic voters to serve his own interests, while state senator Zellnor Myrie emphasized the need for a mayor who will stand up for the city’s values.

As Adams faces scrutiny over his evolving political positions amid his corruption case, his future actions will be closely monitored as he navigates the upcoming mayoral election.
