Trump selects former Senator David Perdue to serve as the next ambassador to China

President-elect Donald Trump has nominated former Senator David Perdue to be the ambassador to China. Perdue, a former CEO, is said to bring valuable expertise to help build the relationship between the U.S. and China, despite having pushed Trump’s debunked lies about electoral fraud. Economic tensions between the two countries are expected to be a major focus for the new administration, with Trump threatening to impose tariffs on products from Mexico, Canada, and China as part of his efforts to crack down on illegal immigration and drugs.

The Chinese Embassy has warned that everyone will lose in a potential trade war and emphasized the mutually beneficial nature of China-U.S. economic and trade cooperation. It remains unclear whether Trump will follow through on these threats or if he is using them as a negotiating tactic. If implemented, these tariffs could significantly raise prices for American consumers on a wide range of goods, as the U.S. is the largest importer in the world with Mexico, China, and Canada being its top three suppliers.

Additionally, Trump has announced more appointments to his immigration team, including former Border Patrol Chief Rodney Scott as head of U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Caleb Vitello as acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Brandon Judd, head of the Border Patrol Union, has been named as ambassador to Chile. These appointments align with Trump’s promises of mass deportations and border crackdowns, with Scott and Judd having been supporters of his policies in the past.
