Mary Review: Stirring Biblical Tale Makes Anthony Hopkins’ Herod the Standout

The biblical adaptation “Mary” featuring the early years of Mary, mother of Christ, is a fairly straightforward film that lacks excitement and depth. While Anthony Hopkins delivers a solid performance as Herod, the rest of the cast falls flat, with the titular Mary portrayed as a pious and uninspiring character. The film includes some cheesy lines and attempts at modern vernacular that may turn off viewers.

Despite its flaws, “Mary” does have some redeeming moments, such as a thrilling sequence where baby Jesus is saved from Herod’s minions as Bethlehem burns. The film also includes a scene where Mary is urged to protect the infant by throwing him off a roof in a wicker basket.

However, audiences must endure tedious dramatizations of scripture passages to reach the more exciting parts of the film. Overall, “Mary” may not be the best choice for those seeking a thrilling or engaging biblical adaptation. Last year’s “Journey to Bethlehem” with Antonio Banderas offers a more entertaining and engaging take on the same material.

“Mary” will be available on Netflix from December 6th.
