The New York Police Department has released CCTV stills of a person of interest in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a New York City hotel. The images show a man wearing a hooded jacket with his face clearly visible, in contrast to previous images that showed him with his face concealed by a mask. Thompson was shot dead in an early morning ambush, with the attacker seen on surveillance video shooting him multiple times before fleeing the scene. The killing has been described as premeditated and targeted by NYPD officials. Shell casings found at the scene were marked with words similar to a book title about insurance companies avoiding claims.
While police have not announced a motive for Thompson’s murder, his wife mentioned that there were threats against him. The CEO’s death has sparked a wave of social media commentary, with some celebrating the murder due to negative experiences with UnitedHealthcare denying medical coverage. UnitedHealthcare is a major health insurer in the US, with revenues of $371.6bn in 2023. Thompson, who had been with the company since 2004 and served as CEO since 2021, received $10.2m in compensation in the same year.
The investigation into Thompson’s killing is ongoing, with police seeking information on the individual in the CCTV images. The case has brought attention to the contentious issue of insurance denials and the impact they have on people’s lives.
