Grand Central Madison interior named ‘Most Beautiful Passenger Station in the World’

The Grand Central Madison transit hub in Manhattan has been awarded the 2024 Prix Versailles Interior Award for having the “World’s Most Beautiful Passenger Station” interior. The station, which opened in January 2023, was recognized for its innovativeness, creativity, reflection of local heritage, and ecological efficiency. The cavernous terminal is the largest passenger rail terminal built in the US in over 60 years, allowing the Long Island Rail Road to carry 40% more passengers.

The MTA CEO, Janno Lieber, praised the designers and architects for seamlessly blending innovative engineering and architectural grandeur to create a world-class station. Despite some ongoing work on the terminal, such as fire alarm systems, door modifications, and retail space installations, Grand Central Madison has quickly become the third-busiest commuter railroad hub in the country, surpassing other iconic facilities like Boston’s South Station and Chicago’s Union Station.

The station was selected for the prestigious award alongside other beautiful stations from around the world. The UNESCO award focused on the architecture and design of Grand Central Madison, recognizing it as a worthy addition to New York’s iconic mass transit hub. The completion of the terminal and its recognition as the World’s Most Beautiful Passenger Station highlight the importance of blending innovation, architectural grandeur, and local heritage in modern transportation infrastructure.
