A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck near the town of Petrolia in California, about 265 miles north of San Francisco, generating a strong shake and a now-discontinued tsunami warning stretching from southern Oregon to San Francisco. More than 150,000 people were potentially exposed to the shaking, with the quake felt across Humboldt County. A series of aftershocks followed, with the area experiencing 39 aftershocks of at least a 2.5 magnitude by 2:30 p.m. No injuries or major damages were reported, but damage assessments were ongoing. Dr. Stephen DeLong from the U.S. Geological Survey explained that the earthquake’s largely horizontal motion caused it to strike offshore and not particularly deep. Videos captured during the earthquake showed cars and cannabis room shaking violently. Despite the strong quake, no significant damages were reported.
