WNBA announces Toronto 2026 expansion team will be named Tempo

The Toronto Tempo has been unveiled as the newest team in the WNBA, set to begin play in 2026. Following a public engagement program where over 10,000 people gave their input, the team decided on the name Tempo to reflect the energy and pace of the city of Toronto and its residents.

Team president Teresa Resch expressed excitement for the new team, stating that the Tempo will set their own pace, move towards a championship cadence, and inspire people across Canada.

Owned by Kilmer Sports Ventures, the Tempo will play their games at Toronto’s Coca-Cola Coliseum. The team’s branding, including logo and colors, has been officially announced, with uniforms yet to be unveiled.

The WNBA continues to expand, with the Golden State Valkyries set to join the league in 2025 and a Portland franchise entering in 2026 alongside the Tempo. The first WNBA expansion draft since 2008 will take place on December 6, with another draft scheduled for next year as the league grows.

The Toronto Tempo looks forward to making its mark on the league and representing Canada as the country’s first WNBA team. Fans can look forward to an exciting new chapter in women’s basketball in Toronto.
