The Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen is set to undergo a major transformation as plans to rebuild and replace the outdated hub have received federal approval. The $10 billion project, supported by governors of New York and New Jersey, will bring a world-class Midtown Bus Terminal to the city.
The project, which aims to accommodate the growing demand of commuters, will eliminate the current outdated infrastructure and create a spacious 2.1-million-square-foot concourse designed by renowned architect Norman Foster. Construction will be done in phases, with an initial staging area serving as a temporary terminal while the existing one is demolished and rebuilt.
The new facility is expected to provide an improved travel experience for passengers and help reduce congestion on city streets. It will also feature new concessions and retail amenities, making it a modern gateway to New York City.
The approvals from the federal and city governments mark a significant step towards the realization of the project, which is scheduled to begin construction next year. The temporary terminal and new ramps are expected to be completed by 2028, with the main terminal set to be completed by 2032. This transformation aims to make the Port Authority Bus Terminal a more efficient and enjoyable transportation hub for the region.
