Live Stream: Final Hearing of House Task Force on Attempts to Assassinate Trump

Secret Service Acting Director Ronald Rowe testified before a House task force investigating assassination attempts on President-elect Donald Trump. The incidents occurred in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13 and in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sept. 15. The panel aims to identify security failures and make recommendations to prevent future attacks. The Secret Service faced scrutiny after the initial attack, resulting in the resignation of the director at the time, Kimberly Cheatle. Rowe’s testimony highlighted critical gaps in the Secret Service’s operations and changes he implemented in response, such as creating an aviation unit and shifting the Office of Investigations.

Chairman Rep. Mike Kelly praised the Secret Service’s cooperation during the investigation, which involved interviews with employees, extensive document review, and site visits. The panel found deficiencies in communication and intelligence during the Butler rally but did not find evidence that agents knew about the shooter. An interim report released in October deemed the July 13 incident preventable, citing planning and coordination issues.

The task force, composed of seven Republicans and six Democrats, is expected to submit a final report soon. The House task force also investigated the Sept. 15 incident involving a man with a weapon near Trump. The panel issued subpoenas to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives for testimony. The testimony revealed details of the events and the response to the attempted attacks. The investigation will help improve security measures to protect future presidents and prevent similar incidents from happening.
