Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for defense secretary, has vowed not to drink any alcohol if confirmed by the Senate. This commitment comes after allegations of repeated intoxication in his previous role as president of Concerned Veterans for America, which he denies. Hegseth referenced military rules prohibiting alcohol consumption during deployment as his motivation for staying sober in his new role. Despite facing an uphill Senate confirmation due to accusations of sexual assault, which he denies, Hegseth remains determined, with Trump supporting him. The New Yorker published a story citing instances of Hegseth being intoxicated at events, which he also denied. Hegseth spent time at the Capitol seeking support from Republican senators, while his mother made an appeal for him on Fox News, claiming he is a changed person. Although Trump has publicly backed Hegseth, there are reports he is considering replacing him with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Hegseth seeks to push forward and prove himself as a capable leader in the Department of Defense, despite facing scrutiny and challenges during the confirmation process.
