Bronx bodega owner charged but released without bail following shooting of armed robber in the foot

Bodega owners in New York City are hailing a Bronx judge’s decision to release Jhony Gomez Cordero, a bodega worker, without bail after he used a gun to defend his store against armed robbers on Thanksgiving. The United Bodegas of America and supporters of Cordero gathered outside his store, Mi Gerizin Market, to celebrate his release. Cordero, 57, found the gun in the trash can of his store and used it when two masked gunmen entered, shooting one in the foot. He was initially charged with attempted murder but was later charged only with weapons possession after prosecutors reviewed the case.

Fernando Mateo, a spokesperson for the United Bodegas of America, praised the judge for releasing Cordero and emphasized the need to support individuals like him who intervene to protect others from violence. Cordero, a husband and father, will appear in court again on December 19 to face the weapons charges. Mateo stressed the importance of supporting individuals who defend their businesses and communities, highlighting the risks they face in doing so.

The incident has sparked a debate about self-defense and the rights of individuals to protect themselves and their businesses. Bodega owners are calling for greater support for those who take action against crime and violence, emphasizing the role they play in keeping communities safe. The United Bodegas of America has pledged to continue supporting Cordero as he faces his legal battle.
