Bahamas refuses Trump’s offer to accept deported third-country migrants

Bahamas Rejects Trump Transition Team’s Proposal for Deportation Flights

The Bahamas has turned down a proposal from the transition team of US President-elect Donald Trump to accept deportation flights of migrants from other countries who may be deported by the incoming administration. In a statement, Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davis’s office stated that the country does not have the resources to accommodate such a request and firmly rejected the proposal.

The proposed deportation operation has raised questions about the feasibility of removing millions of undocumented immigrants from the US, as well as the limits of President Trump’s power. The Department of Homeland Security estimates 11 million unauthorized immigrants lived in the US in 2022, while the Bahamas has a population of less than 400,000.

Trump’s team was reportedly preparing a list of countries where migrants could be sent if their home countries do not agree to take them back, including the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos Islands, Panama, and Grenada.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has expressed concerns about the potential impact of the mass deportation agenda and filed a lawsuit to obtain records related to ICE’s deportation flights. Meanwhile, Trump continues to promote his hardline immigration policies, threatening tariffs on Mexico and Canada until they address issues related to drugs and illegal aliens.

In response, Mexico has made efforts to bolster border security and expressed a desire to avoid taking in third-country deportees. President Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized Mexico’s solidarity with everyone but highlighted the importance of focusing on the deportation of Mexicans. The situation remains uncertain as to which countries will agree to take in migrants and asylum seekers when Trump takes office in January.
