NBC New York advises consumers to discard pork product sold in certain northeastern states

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert for frozen ready-to-eat pork mortadella products imported illegally from Ecuador. The pork product, labeled as “Mortadela Especial Bolognia,” was found in retail and distributor locations in several states including Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York. Consumers are advised not to consume the product and to either throw it out or return it to the place of purchase.

The FSIS discovered the unauthorized pork products during routine surveillance of a warehouse where it was found that the products did not have the USDA mark of inspection. There have been no reports of illness linked to the consumption of the pork product at this time, but consumers are encouraged to contact healthcare providers if they have any concerns.

The FSIS has also provided a hotline, 888-674-6854, for consumers with questions about the product or who want to report a problem with a meat, poultry, or egg product. Additionally, consumers can report issues with the product online. Authorities are working to ensure the safety of consumers and prevent any potential health risks associated with the illegally imported pork product.
