NYPD detectives have apprehended a 22-year-old car thief, Sakho Mohamed, who stole an idling Acura on Thanksgiving with a 7-year-old boy in the back seat. Mohamed was arrested without incident and faces charges including car theft, kidnapping, robbery, and abandonment of a child after pulling over and fleeing on foot with the boy still inside. The incident occurred near Pelham Bay Park, and the child was later found unharmed at a location three miles away. The boy was taken to Jacobi Medical Center for evaluation and reunited with his parents. Surveillance video captured Mohamed running from the vehicle after abandoning it. Residents in the neighborhood expressed shock at the brazen theft, calling it unusual and disturbing. In a separate incident the following day, another car thief stole a red Acura with a 4-year-old girl inside but abandoned the vehicle a few blocks away, and the child was found unharmed. This alarming trend of car thefts involving children has left the community on edge, prompting calls for increased vigilance and security measures. The swift actions of law enforcement led to the safe recovery of the children in both cases, providing some relief to worried residents. The perpetrators will face legal consequences for their reckless and dangerous actions.
