Former Montreal Canadiens General Manager (GM), Marc Bergevin, was fired three years ago today, leading to him taking up a low-profile role as senior adviser with the Los Angeles Kings. Bergevin, who had been in the spotlight for nearly a decade in Montreal, welcomed the change in lifestyle that came with his new position, allowing him to enjoy a sense of anonymity in Redondo Beach, California.
Reflecting on his time in Montreal, Bergevin expressed no regrets and highlighted positive memories from his tenure. He acknowledged the toll that COVID-19 restrictions and being away from his children had taken on him, contributing to his decision to decline an extension offered by Habs owner, Geoff Molson.
During his time in Montreal, Bergevin made a mix of successful and unsuccessful trades, with a focus on incremental improvements rather than solely chasing big moves. He discussed some of his notable trades, including the deal that brought Shea Weber to Montreal in exchange for P.K. Subban.
Bergevin also addressed the controversial decision to draft Logan Mailloux in 2021, admitting that he wished he had handled the situation differently. Looking ahead, Bergevin remains open to the idea of returning as an NHL GM and has already interviewed for several positions since leaving Montreal.
Currently working with the Kings, Bergevin is content with his role as a senior adviser but is open to potential opportunities in the future. He expressed gratitude for his time in Montreal, offering well wishes to his former colleagues and the organization as a whole.
