Designer faces colored paper issue due to daily rewriting process of ‘Gladiator’

The production designer of the epic action movie “Gladiator,” Arthur Max, revealed that the film faced challenges due to constant script revisions during filming. The color-coded system set by the Writers Guild had to be expanded beyond the usual nine colors as “Gladiator” went through numerous revisions that broke the system. The film’s director, Sir Ridley Scott, was constantly making changes to the script, leading to a chaotic production process.

The crew of “Gladiator” had to come up with creative solutions, such as adding stripes to signify different versions of the script once they ran out of colors. Production staff ran out of different colored paper due to the constant script changes, causing a unique problem where new pages had to be distinguished by stripes on reused paper.

The chaotic script situation during the filming of “Gladiator” was also commented on by lead actor Russell Crowe, who described how the production struggled with rapid changes to the script. The film, starring Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, and others, is currently available to stream on various platforms.

“Gladiator II,” starring Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, and Denzel Washington, is now playing in theaters. The film, which follows the success of the original “Gladiator,” highlights the challenges and unique solutions that the crew faced during the production process.
