Alabama A&M football player Medrick Burnett Jr. tragically passed away after suffering a head injury during a game last month. The 20-year-old redshirt freshman linebacker was injured on October 26 during a game against Alabama State.
Burnett, who had transferred to Alabama A&M from Grambling, had played in seven games this season. He was pronounced dead on Wednesday, according to the Jefferson County Coroner/Medical Examiner Office.
University officials initially issued a statement declaring Burnett’s death, which was later retracted after it was determined to be erroneous. The university’s athletic department called it an “unfortunate occurrence” and apologized for the mistake.
The cause and manner of Burnett’s death have not been disclosed at this time, but officials plan to release a statement on Saturday. Alabama A&M has not yet responded to requests for comment.
This tragic incident has left the Alabama A&M community in mourning as they remember Medrick Burnett Jr.’s contributions to the football team. The university and the entire community extend their condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.
