Conversely, populous regions such as the United States and Europe would face devastating famine, with a majority of their populations likely to die from starvation. The study outlines three possible scenarios for how the world’s food systems would respond after a nuclear conflict, emphasizing the importance of livestock in survival.
While the immediate danger of a nuclear blast is a major concern, recent geopolitical tensions have heightened the nuclear threat, with Russia revising its nuclear doctrine to lower the threshold for a nuclear response. Former President Dmitry Medvedev warned that Russia’s new missiles are capable of striking European capitals within minutes, increasing global fears of a nuclear conflict.
Despite the grim outlook, some countries have been identified as potential safe havens during a nuclear crisis, including Antarctica, Iceland, New Zealand, Switzerland, and several South American nations. These countries are less likely to be impacted by nuclear fallout and famine, offering hope for those seeking refuge in times of global conflict.
