Andrew Cuomo faces criticism from 2025 mayoral candidates as he prepares to enter the race

Former New York governor Andrew Cuomo is rumored to be considering a bid for mayor in the 2025 Democratic primary, sparking criticism from other candidates. City Comptroller Brad Lander and Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani have attacked Cuomo for his reported interest in the race, citing his absence from the city and his controversial record.

Cuomo’s spokesperson did not confirm or deny the rumors, listing his accomplishments as governor instead. Lander and Mamdani highlighted Cuomo’s alleged cover-up of nursing home deaths during the pandemic, criminal probes, and sexual misconduct allegations that led to his resignation in 2021.

Mamdani accused Cuomo of delaying his official entrance into the race to avoid scrutiny of his record. Other candidates, such as Scott Stringer, have also criticized Cuomo, citing his potential liabilities but not including the sexual misconduct allegations.

Despite floating the possibility of running for mayor for nearly a year, Cuomo had previously stated he would not run if Mayor Eric Adams was still in the race. However, with Adams facing a federal indictment, Cuomo’s plans remain uncertain.

The renewed interest in Cuomo’s political future comes as the race for mayor heats up, with more contenders announcing their bids in the aftermath of Adams’ legal troubles. Cuomo, known for his aggressive and controversial leadership style, faces an uphill battle if he decides to officially enter the race.
