Former Liberty executive Ohemaa Nyanin experienced mixed emotions as she watched Game 2 of the WNBA Finals at the Barclays Center, reflecting on her time with the team that led to their success. Nyanin started as a manager of basketball operations and worked her way up to assistant GM, witnessing the growth of the Liberty from averaging fewer than 2,300 fans in 2019 to selling out the Barclays Center.
Having recently transitioned to become the Golden State Valkyries’ GM, Nyanin felt torn as she supported her former team in the Finals. Despite leaving the Liberty, she still felt a strong connection to them as they clinched the championship. Her journey from Brooklyn to San Francisco was emotional, but the validation she found in the Liberty’s success reaffirmed her decision to move to a new position.
Nyanin’s close relationship with former Liberty GM Jonathan Kolb helped her navigate the challenging decision to leave the team she had been with for years. Although she initially questioned whether she had made the right choice, Kolb’s support and encouragement gave her the confidence to embrace her new role with the Valkyries. After witnessing the Liberty’s triumphant season, Nyanin met with Kolb to reflect on their shared journey and prepare for her responsibilities with the Valkyries. With Kolb’s mentorship and guidance, Nyanin feels prepared to lead her new team to success in the upcoming season.
