Lebanese officials report that over 3,700 people have been killed by Israel’s bombing campaign, with many being civilians, while over 130 have been killed on the Israeli side in the ongoing conflict. However, an international breakthrough came with a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah, brokered by the US and France, leading to the return of displaced residents to southern Lebanon.
The agreement, requiring Hezbollah to end its armed presence in southern Lebanon and Israeli troops to return to their side of the border, was hailed as long overdue by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot emphasized France’s crucial role in the negotiations, highlighting its special relationship with Lebanon.
While the ceasefire offers a respite to the region after more than a year of fighting, concerns remain over its ability to resolve the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The agreement effectively isolates Hamas, with Hezbollah withdrawing support for their efforts. Israel has warned of a forceful response to any ceasefire violations by Hezbollah.
