Will Barclay retains position as Republican leader in New York Assembly

Central New York state Assemblyman Will Barclay has been re-elected as Republican leader in the Democratic-dominated chamber, as announced on Monday afternoon. Barclay, who first entered the state Assembly in 2002, has been leading the Assembly Republicans since 2020 after replacing Brian Kolb.

Expressing gratitude for the trust and confidence placed in him by his fellow Conference members, Barclay emphasized the hard work and dedication of his team, which now includes six new members bringing fresh perspectives and enthusiasm. Looking ahead to the upcoming 2025 legislative session starting in January, Barclay outlined their goals of improving the lives of New Yorkers by focusing on safety, affordability, and creating a promising future for families in the state.

With Republicans being in the minority in the 150-member state Assembly for several decades, Democrats are expected to once again hold a supermajority in the lower chamber of the state Legislature. Despite the challenges of being outnumbered, Barclay and his team are committed to representing their constituents and continuing their efforts to make New York a better place for everyone.

As they prepare for the upcoming legislative session, Barclay and the Assembly Republicans are ready to tackle important issues and work towards creating a safer, more affordable, and prosperous future for the people of New York.
