Blue Man Group concludes over 30-year run in New York theaters

After a successful 34-year run, the Blue Man Group will bid farewell to New York City in the new year. The off-Broadway show, known for its unique blend of physical comedy, percussion-heavy music, and blue-painted performers, will have its final hometown performance on Feb. 2. Managing director Jack Kenn expressed gratitude to the cast, crew, and creative team for capturing the hearts of millions night after night.

Created in 1991, the show has had 17,000 performances at the Astor Place Theater, leading to its expansion to other cities and even a cruise line show. Acquired by Cirque du Soleil in 2017, the Blue Man Group was able to reach new markets and continue its success. Despite the closures in New York and Chicago, the show will continue in other cities.

The decision to end the New York and Chicago shows was not attributed to a specific reason, and it is possible that the final performances in these cities may be extended. The closure of the Blue Man Group in New York City comes after another off-Broadway institution, “Stomp,” ended its 29-year run due to declining ticket sales. With the curtains closing on these iconic shows, it marks the end of an era for off-Broadway entertainment in New York City.
