NASCAR Truck Series driver Conner Jones has been suspended for one race after intentionally crashing into another driver, Matt Mills, during a race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The incident left Mills hospitalized for two days with smoke inhalation after his truck caught fire. Jones initially received a two-lap penalty, but NASCAR officials later decided that a one-race suspension was also necessary.
Jones issued an apology on social media, acknowledging that his actions were a result of frustration from previous on-track incidents with Mills. Mills, who has since been released from the hospital, expressed gratitude for the support he received from fans during his time in the hospital.
Despite the suspension, Mills has been cleared to race at Martinsville Speedway on Friday and currently sits 23rd in the point standings for Niece Motorsports. Jones, who has been driving part-time for ThorSport Racing this season, has a best finish of 11th. A replacement driver for Jones for the upcoming race has not been named.
The incident highlights the emotional nature of racing and the consequences that can result from on-track conflicts. Both drivers will now focus on moving forward and trying to have a successful end to the season.
