Dozens of Roads to Close Sunday for NYC Marathon, Police Announce

Enhanced Security Measures for 2024 NYC Marathon Amid Global Concerns

New York City is gearing up for the 2024 Marathon this weekend, implementing heightened security measures and street closures in response to increasing global tensions and political unrest. NYPD officials announced on Wednesday that they are prioritizing the safety of both participants and spectators.

In a break from tradition, bicycles will be prohibited on the marathon route, with Chief of Patrol John Chell emphasizing strict enforcement of this rule to ensure safety. “We’ve given reminders and we’ll be out there strong; no bikes will be on the marathon at all,” he stated. The race will also feature traditional security protocols, including anti-drone units, sand trucks strategically placed to prevent unauthorized vehicle access, and plainclothes officers mingling within the crowds.

NYPD Deputy Commissioner for Intelligence and Counterterrorism, Rebecca Weiner, noted that the security landscape has become increasingly complex due to global conflicts and political polarization. “Last year, we had a plan, we executed it, and the marathon went off without a hitch. The same will be true of this year,” she asserted.

While specific road closures have yet to be detailed, authorities warn New Yorkers to anticipate widespread closures beginning Saturday evening and continuing through the marathon on Sunday morning.

In preparation for the influx of approximately 50,000 runners and their families, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) will modify service. Adjustments include the cancellation of certain bus routes through Central Park, designating some stairways for entry or exit only, and providing extra staff at train platforms near the finish line to assist commuters.

As the city prepares for this momentous event, officials encourage participants and spectators to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings.
