Italian skiing star Matilde Lorenzi, aged just 19, tragically passed away after sustaining injuries during a training session. The International Ski and Snowboard Federation expressed their deepest condolences, along with the Italian Ministry of Defense, mourning the loss of the rising athlete. The federation confirmed that Lorenzi fell during training on the Grawand G1 slope in Val Senales.
Lorenzi, a successful skier who participated in last year’s Junior World Alpine Ski Championships, was also the reigning Italian junior champion. She had a close bond with her older sister Lucrezia Lorenzi, who also competes in skiing. The skiing community, including Olympic athletes such as Lindsey Vonn and Mikaela Shiffrin, paid tribute to Lorenzi on social media.
Following the news of her death, Lucrezia invited friends and fans to a church to pray for her sister. Lorenzi’s final social media post featured snapshots from a recent trip to Ibiza with fellow skier Federico Tomasoni, who expressed his love for her in an emotional Instagram Story photo.
The skiing world is mourning the loss of a promising young talent, with the International Ski and Snowboard Federation, FISI President Flavio Roda, and the entire Italian winter sports community honoring Lorenzi’s memory. Her death serves as a reminder of the risks that come with pursuing excellence in competitive sports.
