Queens Resident Joel Kaufman earned the title of the official last finisher of the TCS New York City Marathon last year. He took 8 hours, 43 minutes, and 34 seconds to complete the 26.2-mile race, a pace of 19 minutes and 59 seconds per mile. Kaufman, a retired high school math teacher, has been walking the marathon for a decade to support people battling leukemia and lymphoma. He has raised over $150,000 for the cause.
This year, Kaufman will be starting 2 hours earlier than the other participants as a nod to his inspirational story. He plans to wear his signature cape spotlighting leukemia patients, an American flag headband, a Jewish star, and other symbolic items. Kaufman’s goal is to raise awareness and funds for leukemia and lymphoma while fulfilling his dream of completing a marathon in 6 hours and 30 minutes.
Kaufman has completed marathons at Disney World, London, and Chicago, and he typically trains by walking 5 miles every other day to prevent injuries. Despite taking a longer time to finish the race, Kaufman receives tremendous support from fellow runners and bystanders along the route. His dedication to the cause and perseverance in walking the marathon has inspired many.
New York Road Runners recognized Kaufman as the last official finisher of the marathon last year, and this year, he will be starting with a group of 26 marathon runners with inspiring stories. Kaufman plans to continue walking marathons in the future, stating that he is just getting started.
