Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently attended the fourth Ukraine-Nordic Summit in Iceland, where he met with the Prime Ministers of Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Sweden. During the summit, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the Nordic countries’ support of Ukraine, particularly in its aspirations to join NATO.
Discussions at the summit focused on Ukraine’s ‘Victory Plan’, with the Nordic leaders reaffirming their commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and security. Norway and Sweden announced significant aid packages for Ukraine, with Norway pledging €500 million and Sweden committing 729 million Swedish krona in military assistance.
The leaders also highlighted five key areas of assistance, including ongoing winter support, strengthening bilateral security cooperation, and using frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine’s defence industry. They also pledged to continue efforts to strengthen European ammunition production.
The issue of Ukraine’s NATO membership was discussed, with all five Nordic nations supporting Ukraine’s path to full Euro-Atlantic integration. They also discussed opening EU accession negotiations for Ukraine.
The summit marks a significant step in strengthening the relationship between Ukraine and the Nordic countries, with a focus on supporting Ukraine’s security and sovereignty. The previous summit was held in Stockholm in May, and this recent meeting in Iceland further solidifies the partnership between Ukraine and the Nordic nations.
