German citizen of Iranian descent, Jamshid Sharmahd, who also held US residency, has been executed in Iran for ‘leading terror operations’. Sharmahd was sentenced to death in 2023 for ‘corruption on earth’, a capital offence under Iran’s Islamic laws. He was convicted of heading a pro-monarchist group accused of a deadly 2008 bombing and planning other attacks in the country. Sharmahd was seized by Iranian authorities in August 2020 while travelling through the United Arab Emirates.
Germany’s foreign minister condemned Iran’s “inhumane regime” for the execution, stating that the killing of Sharmahd shows the cruelty of the regime in Tehran. The European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights also condemned the execution as “shocking”, citing the lack of a fair trial and torture during Sharmahd’s custody.
Sharmahd, who was born in Tehran but does not hold an Iranian passport, was residing in the US state of California. His family has criticized the German government’s approach towards hostages in Iran, calling for more transparency and action. Amnesty International reported that Sharmahd had been subjected to enforced disappearance, torture, and ill treatment.
Iranian state media described Sharmahd as a “criminal terrorist” who was supported by American and European countries. Sharmahd was the leader of the Kingdom Assembly of Iran, or Tondar, seeking to restore the Iranian monarchy. The execution of Sharmahd has brought attention to the human rights abuses in Iran and sparked condemnation from international organizations and governments.
