North Carolina Students Return to School for the First Time Since Hurricane Helene

Valle Crucis Elementary School in North Carolina welcomed students back for the first time since Hurricane Helene struck the state a month ago. The school, which was flooded with 4 feet of water, has temporarily moved classes to an old conference center a mile away. Schools in five districts remain closed, with some not expected to open until early November. The hurricane caused devastation across six states, resulting in at least 217 deaths. Extra counselors were available for students dealing with the mental and emotional aftermath of the disaster. One student, Georgia, shared her experience of surviving the flood with her family. Despite the challenges, students expressed gratitude and excitement to return to school and see their classmates. The Watauga County Schools Superintendent acknowledged the trauma students and families have endured, emphasizing the importance of facilitating a sense of normalcy in the school environment. Through the support of counselors and the community, students are learning valuable lessons about resilience and survival as they navigate the aftermath of the hurricane.
