Former Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė has warned that Russia remains a constant threat to Europe under Vladimir Putin and has called for greater investment in the defence industry. In an interview with Euronews, Grybauskaitė expressed concerns about the potential peace deal in Ukraine, which she believes would only give Russia time to prepare for further aggression against its neighbors, including the Baltic States.
With the center-left Social Democratic Party leading in Lithuania’s legislative elections, Grybauskaitė emphasized the importance of maintaining a pro-European, pro-NATO, and pro-Ukrainian stance in foreign policy. She also highlighted the need for rapid investment in the defence industry to address the challenges posed by Russia and potential changes in US leadership following the upcoming elections.
Grybauskaitė’s remarks come amidst discussions at the Estoril Conferences in Portugal, where she participated in a panel on diplomacy and international cooperation alongside other former world leaders. As the runoff vote in Lithuania approaches, Grybauskaitė’s insights serve as a reminder of the ongoing threats posed by Russia and the importance of strong defense capabilities within Europe.
