Lithuanian Defence Minister Calls for Inviting Ukraine to Join NATO

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently presented his Victory Plan to EU and NATO allies, proposing Ukraine’s NATO membership. Baltic countries like Lithuania are in support of this move, believing it is crucial for Ukraine’s future security and in deterring Russia. Lithuanian Defence Minister Laurynas Kasčiūnas emphasized the need for NATO to extend an invitation for Ukraine to join, stating that Russia cannot have veto power over another country’s future.

Despite support from countries like Lithuania, the proposal faces opposition from allies such as the US, Hungary, and Slovakia. Ukraine was previously told it was on an “irreversible bridge” towards NATO membership, but a formal invitation has not been extended. Kasčiūnas stressed that an invitation is not the same as full membership, but it sends a strong signal to Russia and Ukraine about Ukraine’s western direction and sovereignty.

He also emphasized the importance of taking stronger action against Russia, highlighting the need to provide Ukraine with more weapons for deterrence. Kasčiūnas argued that doing nothing is escalatory, as seen in the current situation. He urged for actions, not just words, to show strength towards Russia.

The debate over Ukraine’s NATO membership continues, with differing opinions on the best approach towards Russia and ensuring Ukraine’s security and independence.
