Historic lack of rain puts NY and NJ at risk of drought and wildfires

The start to fall in New York City is experiencing its driest conditions in 100 years, raising concerns among meteorologists about the potential for wildfires and drought. Despite the lack of rain, the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation has not yet issued any official warnings. However, Central New Jersey has entered a moderate drought, and parts of South Jersey are facing severe drought conditions.

In response, Governor Phil Murphy has issued a statewide drought watch and advised residents to conserve water. New Yorkers are being urged to be cautious with outdoor fires, check on plants, and take shorter showers to help preserve water levels. Meteorologist Dominic Ramunni from the National Weather Service warned that if conditions do not improve soon, water restrictions may have to be put in place.

Thankfully, the state had a relatively wet summer, providing some room for the current dry conditions. Ramunni expressed hope that rain will arrive before the situation gets significantly worse. As New York City continues to experience this unusually dry period, residents are urged to take precautions to prevent further exacerbation of the drought and wildfire risk.
