Many US companies are actively working to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions as part of a global effort to fight climate change. USA TODAY and Statista have been ranking companies based on their progress in reducing emissions for the past two years, with the next list set to be published on Earth Day in 2025. This ranking is important as federal attempts to publish similar listings have stalled.
California has passed legislation requiring certain companies to report their greenhouse gas emissions starting in 2026, but federal regulations have been put on hold due to lawsuits. In the meantime, some companies are voluntarily reducing their carbon dioxide emissions and making this information public.
The rankings are based on emissions intensity, which measures how much greenhouse gases a company produces relative to its revenue, allowing for comparisons between different-sized enterprises. Companies can include Scope 3 emissions, but only Scope 1 and 2 are required. Companies that publish their Scope 3 emissions will receive credit for transparency.
To be included in the rankings, companies must be headquartered in the United States with a minimum revenue of $50 million in 2023. They must fill out a short survey and verify the data provided by the deadline of December 22, 2024. Statista, a German-based market and consumer data company, is managing the ranking.
