Cam Thomas’ rookie contract not extended by Nets before deadline

The Brooklyn Nets declined to extend the rookie contracts of three eligible players, including leading scorer Cam Thomas, by Monday’s deadline. Thomas, who averaged 22.5 points per game last season, will earn $4.04 million this season. Injured center Day’Ron Sharpe and Ziaire Williams were also eligible for extensions but did not receive them.

Meanwhile, the Nets celebrated their WNBA counterpart, the New York Liberty, on their championship win at a sold-out Barclays Center. Coach Jordi Fernandez praised the team’s unity and perseverance in winning the title. Liberty stars Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart struggled with shooting but secured a historic victory in overtime against the Minnesota Lynx.

Ben Simmons, who logged 51 minutes in three preseason games after recovering from back surgery, has impressed Fernandez with his commitment and positivity. Fernandez expects Simmons, a three-time All-Star, to contribute as a floor general for the team. Trendon Watford, who has been out with a hamstring injury, is expected to return to practice early next week.

With key decisions regarding player contracts and preparations for the upcoming season, the Brooklyn Nets are gearing up for a competitive run in the NBA. The team’s dedication, both on and off the court, signals an exciting journey ahead for players and fans alike.
