The first artwork created by a humanoid robot to be auctioned by Sotheby’s

Sotheby’s, the renowned auction house, is set to make history later this month by auctioning off the first ever artwork created by a humanoid robot. Ai-Da, a humanoid robot artist, has contributed a mixed-media painting titled “AI God,” a portrait of mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing, considered the father of modern computing. The 64 x 90.5 inch painting is estimated to fetch between $120,000 and $180,000 at the auction on October 31.

Ai-Da is a project created by UK-based art dealer Aidan Meller, and the robot is able to draw and paint using cameras in her eyes, AI algorithms, and a robotic arm. This auction marks the first time a work from a robot of this type will be sold at Sotheby’s. Meller sees the auction as a way to highlight the growing role of AI in society and spark discussions about technological advancements.

The proceeds from the sale of the painting will be reinvested in the Ai-Da project, which is expensive to power. Sotheby’s Head of NFT and digital art, Michael Bouhanna, views Ai-Da’s portrait as part of a selection of cutting-edge works that challenge the boundaries of artistic creation in the 21st century. The valuation of AI-generated works in the art market, however, may pose challenges compared to valuing works by human artists. This auction is expected to be a major milestone in the intersection of art and technology.
