New York veterans experiencing increased rates of disabilities, depression, and PTSD

The recently released report on veterans’ health conducted by the Rand research group and commissioned by the New York Health Foundation reveals concerning trends among veterans returning home to New York. The report indicates that veterans are twice as likely as they were in 2010 to report having a disability, as well as higher rates of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

The increase in reported health issues among veterans is attributed to new disability benefits that have become available in recent years, leading to more thorough screening. Additionally, the passage of the federal Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act of 2022 has expanded benefits for veterans exposed to toxins such as burn pits during their military service.

The report is based on a survey of 1,122 veterans who returned home between 2018 and 2023. Nearly two-thirds of respondents reported receiving a disability rating from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The findings also highlight a greater awareness of mental health issues among veterans, with higher rates of depression and PTSD being reported.

Despite an increase in veterans seeking mental health care, about two in 10 veterans still reported not receiving needed services, in some cases due to lack of knowledge about available resources. Advocates stress the importance of better education and awareness of mental health services, especially among community-based providers who may not be well-versed in veteran-specific health needs.

Moving forward, prioritizing education on veteran health needs among community clinicians and ensuring veterans are aware of available resources, such as free mental health care at NYU Langone’s Military Family Center, is crucial. The data points to the need for continued support and resources for veterans struggling with mental health issues as they reintegrate into civilian life.
