New safety measures implemented for reopening of The Vessel at NYC’s Hudson Yards

The Vessel at Hudson Yards is set to reopen on Monday after implementing new safety features. The 150-foot structure, known for its climbable zigzagging stairs, closed in 2021 following a series of deaths by suicide. The reopening will feature floor-to-ceiling steel mesh barriers in some sections, with the top level remaining closed.

Designed by Thomas Heatherwick, the $150 million three-dimensional public space has been a popular attraction since it first opened in 2019 as the centerpiece of the Hudson Yards development. Despite being closed for some time, interest in visiting the Vessel has remained high, according to Jeff T. Blau, CEO of Related Companies.

The reopening comes after a coordinated effort with Thomas Heatherwick and Heatherwick Studio to install safety measures while preserving the unique experience that draws millions of visitors. Tickets will be required for entrance to the Vessel, and if anyone is in need of help, they can call or text 988 to speak with a trained counselor 24/7 or chat online at 988lifeline.org.

The Vessel’s return will be eagerly anticipated by tourists and locals alike, eager to once again experience this iconic structure in the heart of Manhattan’s West Side.
