Report reveals that half of the UK workforce does not have access to workplace health support

A recent report by the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) has highlighted that almost half of the UK workforce lacks access to essential workplace health support, including winter flu vaccinations and health checks for conditions like cardiovascular diseases. The analysis, which looked at data from the Department for Work and Pensions and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, found that more than 10 million workers in the UK do not have access to basic health services provided by their employers.

The report emphasized that the current workplace health system could worsen existing health inequalities, particularly for those in lower paid industries like hospitality and agriculture who are even less likely to receive health protection interventions at work. The paper called for the government to establish a national health and work standard to ensure a minimum level of support for all employees.

The RSPH’s chief executive, William Roberts, stressed the importance of addressing workplace health issues to reduce the economic burden of ill health, which currently costs an estimated £100 billion annually. He highlighted the need for better health practices in workplaces to prevent people from being signed off sick and to support overall well-being. Roberts urged policymakers to implement the report’s recommendations to make a real impact on improving workplace health and reducing health inequalities.

The Department of Health and Social Care has been contacted for comment on the findings of the report.
